Ballet Kelowna's 17th season launches this November

New 'Dawn' for local ballet

Ballet Kelowna will launch its 17th season this November with Dawn, a high-energy mixed program featuring National Ballet of Canada principal dancer Greta Hodgkinson.

The program will premiere Nov. 1 and 2 at Kelowna Community Theatre, including the first international showing of Ion, a live study of the physical interactions between light, movement and electrical shock inspired by the idea of being struck by lightning.

The company's premiere of Bolero will celebrate the strength and resilience of women as a second item, and the night will finish with Doppeling, a playful piece designed to reflect ideas of conformity and individuality.

It will be one of the last chances for the public to see renowned ballerina Hodgkinson perform before she retires in 2020, following a renowned 30-year dance career.

Ballet Kelowna artistic director Simone Orlando says the new program is dynamic and thought-provoking.

“Dawn examines many aspects of humanity as expressed through dynamic movement. Each piece in this kinetic program reveals an aspect of female identity and one’s deep desire to break free from conformity and find an independent voice. Furthermore, the engaging choreography and spectacular dancers involved in this performance are an undeniable testament to the incredible talent that exists in this country.”

Tickets range from $30.25 to $53.95 and can be purchased at balletkelowna.ca, in person at 100-2600 Enterprise Way or by phone at 250-862-2867.

Performances start at 7:30 p.m. at Kelowna Community Theatre, 1375 Water St.
