Tests have revealed a substance ingested by an eight-year old student in Kelowna was an illicit form of benzodiazepine.
The class of drug is commonly prescribed for a number of ailments, including anxiety, insomnia and muscle spasms.
The Grade 3 student ingested the substance he found in the classroom at A.S. Matheson Elementary Wednesday morning.
The student was working on an assignment in class when he started presenting signs of "significant intoxication" and required emergency ambulance assistance.
The substance was discovered in the classroom Thursday, and sent to Vancouver for chemical testing.
While it's now known what the substance was, a police investigation has yet to determine how it got into the classroom.
Police are encouraging anyone with information to contact the the local RCMP detachment, or call 250-762-3300.
A news release issued by the School District Monday afternoon indicates the child returned to class today.
"The principal of the school spoke to the class in order to ease the student's return, help the young students understand the incident, and remind the children about safety around unknown substances," the district said in its release.
