Bahamian siblings reunited

Bahamian siblings have been safely reunited in Kelowna following Hurricane Dorian, which wreaked havoc in the Bahamas.

Amanda Ferguson and her two-month-old son Maverick arrived in Kelowna on Saturday night at approximately 10:48pm to join her brother Dexter and his wife and son at Manteo Resort.

Kelowna local Mike Carter, who has helped organize their evacuation from the island, says they "managed to get off the island two hours before all travel was suspended."

Much to his mother's relief, baby Maverick was silent for the entire 15 hour flight into Kelowna, and the pair managed to catch up on sleep upon arrival.

She says she is relieved to be in a safe place after seeing her home destroyed. She recalls having to stand outside in the heat for hours on end while holding her son, simply trying to get access to basic needs like water and food.

"It's a very humbling situation. When disaster happens it levels the playing field - peasant and president alike, we all have a need when things so tragic like this happen.

"I'm just so happy because of the humanity of the country. It really shows the calibre of the people to offer help to virtual strangers."

Carter is hopeful Canadians will continue to pull together to help more Bahamian families get off the island.
