Mother and baby saved

Just when it appeared things were stabilizing in the Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Dorian, officials issued a tropical storm warning for the northwestern Bahamas Friday.

At least one family got some good news, however, the Kelowna man who helped rescue the Ferguson family on Tuesday tells Castanet they have begun the process of rescuing Dexter's sister Amanda Ferguson and her two-month-old baby boy Maverick, "they managed to get off the island two hours before all travel was suspended," says Mike Carter.

Carter knows the Ferguson family from his time working on the island and when disaster struck he wasted no time organizing a rescue for Dexter and Bridgenna Ferguson and their son Dexter Jr., who arrived Tuesday night.

Carter personally paid to get the Ferguson family to safety and he has gone out on a limb again to help Amanda and her baby boy Maverick, "they are not in a good way and they left the island with virtually nothing."

Amanda and Maverick are expected to touch down in Kelowna Saturday night around 10:45 p.m. Carter says he has been in touch with Mammas for Mammas who he hopes will be able to help with some essentials but the big thing right now is a place to stay.

"The El and Manteo are full so we really need help finding a place to house these two. People can reach me by email and right now we really need cash," Carter says.

The GoFundMe remains active but typically don't pay out until the goal is reached. "We are going to need long term help to support this family for the next 90 days or so.

Carter says he's heartened by all the support he's received from the Kelowna community and beyond, "I got a call from a woman in New Jersey and the calls have been coming in from all over North America." In spite of the success and altruism Carter says he's also running out of steam and says this will be his last rescue effort, "I am mentally and physically exhausted."
