Refugee family 'so grateful'

The Bahamian family that was forced to flee the island because of the devastation left by Hurricane Dorian is "overwhelmed" by all the support they have received since touching down in Kelowna late Monday night.

Mike Carter, who knows the family well after working with them in Freeport, Bahamas a few years ago tells Castanet, "they've never seen a lake before in their lives, never seen freshwater."

Carter says Dexter and Bridgenna Ferguson and their son Dexter Jr. are settling in nicely thanks to Ted Callahan of Argus properties generous donation of rooms at Manteo Resort.

Now Carter is setting up a fundraiser out of Hotel Eldorado to try and help get Dexter's sister and two-month-old baby off the island as well. "We're halfway to paying off the boat and transportation and now that they're here safely we are moving on to our next family." He's encouraging people to head down to the hotel where they can meet the family and drop off any donations on the second floor.

Dexter's sister has been standing in line for water holding her infant in 35 degree weather and the goal now is to try and arrange boat transportation and a flight for them so they can join the rest of the family in Kelowna. "We think we're going to need another $25,000 but the generosity and support so far has been incredible."

Carter says the clothing donations have been coming in but they are still looking for warm winter clothes in sizes, men XL with 46-48 pants for Dexter, XL young boys 16/ 18 pants for Dexter Jr. and women's small/medium with pants size 14-15 for Bridegenna.

Carter says he would like to thank Kelowna Transit for donating free bus passes and H2O Fitness and Adventure Centre for donating a family pass for the Ferguson's to use while they stay in our city. "We still need long term accommodation plus cash because it is going to take time for GoFundMe to release any funds raised," says Carter.
