Progress on waterfront hotel

A company with roots in Kelowna has been tabbed with constructing one of the tallest buildings in Kelowna.

PCL Construction, which built the H2O Centre and Interior Heart and Surgical Centre in Kelowna and Sparkling Hill in Vernon, has been awarded the contract for the 33-storey hotel and convention centre on the former Willow Inn site.

Gail Temple, vice-president of operations for property owner Westcorp, says PCL is also building the hotel's sale centre, which is currently underway on Bernard Avenue.

"Inside the sales centre, we're not doing just a sales gallery. On the mezzanine, we are also building a model hotel room, a beta suite," said Temple.

"All the millwork for the beta suite is being done in Spain and is being shipped over."

Temple says she expects the sales centre to be complete by the end of September.

In conjunction with that, it's expected the name of the new hotel will be unveiled.

"We are almost ready to do that," she said. "The logo's almost done, but the name has been chosen."

Construction on the hotel itself won't begin until a significant number of the 50 to 55 residences within the development are sold.
