Saving Rutland further pain

A group in Rutland opposed to two more supportive housing projects in the neighbourhood is claiming a small victory.

While plans are still moving ahead for "wet" facilities on McCurdy and McIntosh roads, organizers of Startcomplaning.ca cite a line in a letter from Kelowna Mayor Colin Basran as a positive move forward.

Basran was responding to a letter of concern from one of the group's subscribers.

"I do agree that once the approved projects in Rutland are completed, council should be advocating for future supportive housing developments to take place in other parts of the community," Basran is purported to have written.

Organizers call the mayor's statement a "win for Rutland," saying their voices are having an impact.

"The fight isn't over. In truth, it may only be beginning. But we have our first win," organizers say.

"It also means that now more than ever we must stand together with the rest of Kelowna. It's not just Rutland kids that are at risk. It's all of our kids."
