Dream vacation turns grisly

A Kelowna couple needs help after a dream RV trip took a tragic turn in Colorado.

Bruce and Donna Falkin planned an Rv trip of a lifetime which took them across Canada and then across the border into the United States.

While visiting friends in Colorado, their RV was struck from behind by a semi-trailer. The collision was so powerful that the licence plate was pushed five feet into the RV.

Donna Falkin had to be airlifted to a Denver hospital suffering from critical injuries to both legs, spine, heart. She is also suffering from numerous broken bones and internal injuries.

Her husband, Bruce also suffered significant injuries but has since been released from the Intensive Care Unit but remains in hospital.

A GoFundMe page has been started to help with medical expenses.

One friend tells Castanet, "Bruce and Donna are Rotary Members and have helped the Kelowna community so much, now they need support!"

According to the GoFundMe page, "doctors have said Donna's recovery will take months and she is expected to be in Denver hospital for at least a month."

Donna has already had two surgeries and will likely need several more, followed by months of rehab.

"For those who don't know Bruce and Donna, they are wonderful friends, exceptional Rotarians, and probably the nicest people you'd ever want to meet.  This is going to be a long and painful road for them to travel."

All monies raised will be used to cover Bruce's living expenses in the Denver area for the months Donna will be recovering until she can travel home, as well as (daughter) Tara's and other family members' travel expenses.
