Give Hope nears goal

The Give Hope Wings Northwest Expedition will arrive back at Pitt Meadows Airport this afternoon.

Kelowna pilot Dave McElroy and two other pilots set out three weeks ago from Pitt Meadows, flying north over the B.C. Interior, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Alaska, before flying down the coast, across to Vancouver Island and back to the mainland.

McElroy helped spearhead the latest fundraising effort for the organization and an ambitious 22-country South American flight last year that raised more than $500,000.

"We are grateful to our many supporters who have enabled us to raise $242,000 so far for Hope Air, said McElroy. We remain determined to reach our goal of $250,000 in order to fund 1,000 free medical flights for low-income Canadians who must get to health care far from home."

Kelowna's YLW is the busiest airport in Canada for Hope Air, with more than 1,400 flights last year.
