Perkins Restaurant closes

Nearly 30 employees at Perkins Restaurant in the Ramada Hotel in Kelowna are out of work.

The restaurant, which has been at the hotel for about 25 years, shut its doors suddenly at 3 p.m. Monday.

The decision was made by the owner, who lives in Winnipeg.

The closure took the 28 employees and hotel manager Stan Martindale by surprise. In fact, Martindale says the hotel wasn't aware the restaurant had shut its doors until Tuesday.

Martindale was unable to shine any light on why the restaurant closed, but indicated it obviously wasn't profitable to continue.

It still has a number of years remaining on its long-term lease with the hotel, however.

Martindale says the hotel is trying to find a way to employ some of those left high and dry.

He added the hotel will be looking for a new tenant, preferably another restaurant.
