Rescued after broken leg

UPDATE: 5:20 p.m.

A woman in her 20s was rescued from the Bear Lake Main area Saturday afternoon after she broke her leg while dirt biking. 

At about 2 p.m., six volunteers with Central Okanagan Search and Rescue made their way to the Bear Creek motorized recreational trails area and found the young woman a couple of kilometres up the hill. 

"The subject was in a lot of pain, but we were able to evacuate her and hand her off to BC Ambulance within a reasonable amount of time," said David Crawford, search manager with COSAR.

Crawford says it was "a pretty straightforward" rescue, and they were able to drive their truck close to where the woman had injured herself.

Rescue crews used a trailrider to transport the woman out of the woods. The device is also used by Kelowna's Community Recreational Initiatives Society to help people with disabilities experience the backcountry.

West Kelowna Fire and Rescue also responded to help out at the scene.

UPDATE: 3:25 p.m.

Rescue crews have made contact with the injured dirt biker up Bear Lake Main Road, and they're working to bring her down from the mountain.

Early reports indicate the rider suffered a leg injury and fire crews, paramedics and Central Okanagan Search and Rescue volunteers are working to get her safely down from the hill.

Castanet is receiving reports that Central Okanagan Search and Rescue has been called out to help an injured dirt bike rider.

Witnesses tell Castanet COSAR members and the ambulance service have been called to Bear Lake Main Road following a report of an injured motorcyclist.

Castanet will have more information as soon as it becomes available.
