Tour the KVR trestles

Madison Erhardt

The seventh annual Okanagan Trestles Tour invites you to explore the historic Kettle Valley Rail Trail and Myra Canyon's iconic trestle bridges.

The family friendly ride takes place July 7, taking in sweeping vistas and deep gorges from the former rail line, and winds up with live music, a barbecue and bevvies.

''This event attracts hundreds of people from across Western Canada and beyond," says said event director Glenn Bond. "There are bike mechanics on route, first-aid, six food stations.

"It's nice to know that people have your back,'' he said of the on-trail support.

It's also the 105th anniversary of the completion of Myra Canyon trestles, engineering marvels that spanned canyons hundreds of feet deep. The original trestles burned down in the Okanagan Mountain wildfire of 2003, but were rebuilt with provincial funding and reopened in 2008.

''Cycling this trail is truly a dynamic and challenging venture that unfolds over the expanse of place and time. The 2019 event will be celebrating the Trans Canada Trail and the historic KVR Rail Trail,'' Bond adds.
