Lifeline for families

A last-minute effort to save the Family Hub gets underway Friday June 14.

The Family Hub is hosting a Drive-Thru Breakfast on Friday, June 14 at the Hub between 7:30 and 9 a.m. at Pearson Road Elementary at 700 Pearson Road.

The Family Hub is in danger of closing after three years of giving to families, the Central Okanagan Family Hub is reaching out to the community to ask for help.

The campaign was inspired by the Social Justice Club at Rutland Elementary, who raised almost $1,300 to help.

The Do a Lot for a Little Campaign asks individuals, businesses and organizations to follow in these young leaders footsteps and make a commitment to the Central Okanagan Family Hub.

The Central Okanagan Family Hub is a one-stop shop for families with children aged 0-12 to access family services and community supports.

The Hub was born through the collaboration of 20 child-serving agencies, families and funders to create a one-stop shop for vulnerable families. It opened to much fanfare in September of 2016 at Pearson Elementary School in Rutland.

Now, according to a letter from the Central Okanagan Board of Education, the facility may be forced to close at the end of this year after promised funding from the Ministry of Children and Family Development was pulled.

According to the letter, the Family Hub had been receiving a $55,000 annual grant from MCFD intended to last for five years, however, those funds were recently reallocated to a "different service after only three years."
