Cops hone 2-wheel skills

Madison Erhardt

RCMP officers across B.C. are being put to the test this week at UBC Okanagan.

It's the first time the RCMP Motorcycle Basic Operators Course is being held in Kelowna.

''There are 19 RCMP officers in this course who are learning how to become police on motorcycles. This first week will feature guys doing the cone courses, and on the second week the good people of Kelowna are going to see us everywhere on the streets being policeman,'' says Insp. Dale Somerville.

''All these guys that have come here have their classes sixes, but that doesn't guarantee they will pass.''

''On Friday, with the 19 students, it is an estimation that at least two will not pass the test,'' he added.

Motorcycles are extremely important for the RCMP because of their manoeuvrability.

The bikes weigh about 900 pounds, but despite that, officers were putting them through the cones with care.

''If there is a very serious crash on the bridge, can police cars get there because we are all blocked up in traffic? Probably not. A motorcycle can split lanes, get there fast and render help,'' Somerville added.
