The City of Kelowna had a $9.6 million surplus last year, and it has moved $8.8 million of it to several reserve funds.
City controller Jackie Dueck says the biggest chunk of change, $1.5 million, went to flood control.
Coun. Gail Given had no problem with that decision.
“We utilized those reserves in the past two years,” Given said, “and it’s really important that we replenish them so that we have a similar flexibility in the future.”
Other reserves that received more than $1 million were: land sales, environmental contingency, RCMP, and the city's insurance deductible. The rest – bridge maintenance, building repair, parks development and theatre improvements – received smaller amount towards offsetting the city's infrastructure deficit.
“Our infrastructure deficit ... we’re constantly trying to chip away at,” Coun. Luke Stack said. “And we have a lot more work to do, but here was an opportunity for us to make some headway in that area.”
