YLW Transat routes on hold

For the second time in a month, an airline is suspending routes out of Kelowna International Airport.

YLW officials confirmed Friday that Air Transat will not be offering its usual flights to Puerto Vallarta and Cancun this winter due to aircraft availability and performance.

“Because of the stage length of that aircraft, from Cancun in particular, there are significant load restrictions on that aircraft,” YLW air service development manager Phillip Elchitz said.

“The (Boeing) 737-800 has 189 seats, but Air Transat can only carry 114 passengers from Cancun into Kelowna because of the stage length and the headwinds and the performance of that aircraft.”

WestJet suspended non-stop flights between Kelowna and Toronto earlier this month due to the grounding of its 13 Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. That route is expected to resume in early July.
