Heroes among us

The RCMP honoured their own this week.

Almost two dozen officers, civilian member employees and public service employees were honoured for their service, many with 20 to 35 years on the force.

Acting Commanding Officer of the RCMP in B.C. Assistant Commissioner Steven Thatcher and the District Commander of the RCMP in Southeast B.C. Chief Superintendent Brad Haugli presented the awards on Wednesday.

The day marked memorable life-saving actions, heroic acts of bravery, displays of courage, commitment to volunteering in the community and long service with the RCMP.

Kelowna RCMP Cpl. Kent Hall was awarded the St. John Life Saving Award for his application of a tourniquet to the severe leg wound of a pedestrian who had been struck by a motorcycle in May of 2017. The 68-year-old man was visiting Canada from Germany when he was struck by a motorbike while attempting to cross a busy multi-lane highway in West Kelowna. The tourist sustained serious injuries and was suffering from severe life-threatening blood loss at the time when Cpl. Hall intervened.

The day and ceremony honoured the men and women, like Cpl. Hall, who work and sacrifice to keep civilians safe. Their tag line is: This Is What We Do, This Is Who We Are.
