Driver fakes insurance call

Alanna Kelly

A Kelowna man came out to find his pickup had been damaged and the culprit drove off after allegedly pretending to call an insurance company.

Will Gilchrist parked his truck at Dakoda’s Sports Bar & Grill on April 12. His vehicle was in the parking lot from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Video surveillance obtained by Gilchrist shows a white truck reversing out of a parking spot and backing into a red truck. A witness walks by as the collision occurs, just before 7 p.m.

The male driver then pulls into a spot and after a few seconds exits his truck while holding what appears to be a phone up to his face. He walks over to the vehicle he hit and makes gestures with his hand and talking.

“He faked calling ICBC in front of a witness, and for that reason, the witness did not take down the plates,” says Gilchrist.

The man appears to hang up as he walks away from the truck and drives off. According to Gilchrist, the truck had B.C. plates and is a GMC Sierra, possibly a crew cab.

After calling police and ICBC, he was told no one made a claim, and Gilchrist is now feeling disheartened.

“I would like to post footage of this goofball,” he said. “People need to be held accountable.”

Gilchrist is offering a reward of half his deductible for the identity of the person.
