Batman putting lives at risk

Alanna Kelly

A man dressed up as Batman created more problems for police during a serious incident that unfolded in Kelowna.

Multiple police officers rushed to Pandosy Street and Cadder Avenue on Saturday afternoon with their guns drawn.

A video from the scene captured an individual dressed as Batman walking over to police during a dynamic situation.

Insp. Paul MacDougall says it was a domestic incident in which officers originally believed a firearm was involved.

The man parked his Batman truck at a green light right where the situation was happening.

“Is this a movie set?” a woman filming the video can be heard saying.

Police knew very well this was not a movie, and Batman was not only a distraction but also acting foolishly.

“Situations like this are dynamic and subject to change very quickly, the presence of "Batman" or anyone else is an unwanted distraction and foolish as they are placing themselves at risk,” said MacDougall.

A containment of the scene was set at the residence and the occupants were called out by police.

MacDougall added it was an unfolding, serious situation and most people would assume by the fact that members were deployed with Carbines out.

“The public should remain away from the area as they are putting themselves and the lives of the responding members in jeopardy,” said MacDougall.

Further investigation revealed there was no firearm involved and no charges have been laid.
