Bill Morneau in Kelowna

Madison Erhardt

UPDATE:7:30 p.m.

Canada's Minister of Finance, Bill Morneau addressed a large crowd at Okanagan College Tuesday night focusing on the 2019 budget.

The Minister touched on subjects ranging from the first time home buyers incentive, interprovincial trade, and federal government debt.

Over a dozen questions from the crowd were also answered with a handful of students voicing their concerns about how the budget will effect them in the future.

''Its going to have some pretty direct impact on people. First of all we are putting in place funding and working with the private sector to increase the number co-op and work integrated learning placements and that will impact students across the country that create more spots for people here," Morneau said.

''We have also put in place a lower amount of interest charges on any student debt. For any student that has accumulated any student debt when they get out of college won't accumulate any further interest and will also have a reduced amount of interest charges over the course of their career.''

As for when the budget will become balanced Morneau gave a careful answer.

''The conservatives are saying we should reduce our deficit really quickly and we are saying we should reduce it overtime. We have decided to invest in Canadians and the economy grew.''

''We were the fastest growing economy in 2017, we created more jobs, lowest rates of unemployment so it has worked. Now we don't want to take the prescription of rapidly taking money out of the economy because we will find ourselves in a position where we have an impact on employment and growth. We would rather do that in a very measured way and reduce it over time,'' Morneau added.
