Crane grows sky high

All eyes were pointed to the sky in downtown Kelowna Tuesday, as the tower crane at the Ella development was raised by more than 100 feet.

Construction on the 20-storey mixed retail and residential tower began in January 2018, and 11 storeys have gone up to date.

On Tuesday, crews spent the day inserting additional sections into the crane, raising it up an additional 110 feet, which will allow for work on the remaining floors.

Castanet took a time lapse video of the process from the Castanet building rooftop, across the street from the construction.

The engineering feat attracted the attention of those walking by on the street, before crews finished up by about 6:30 p.m.

Darin Bibby, ITC Construction Group superintendent, says they hope to have all 20 storeys finished by mid June, and they're hoping to have people moved in by next February.

More than 80 per cent of the building's units have already been sold.
