Snow Outlaws rip it up!

Rob Gibson

A gorgeous Okanagan weekend was the perfect backdrop for what has become an annual rite of spring.

Unlike groundhog day this event is a lot louder!

The Snow Outlaws take over Thunder Mountain Raceway with as much horsepower and rubber as they can muster every spring.

This year the event was even bigger and better. Hundreds turned up to watch, drag racing in the snow as engines were revving and the snow was flying. This is the fourth year for the event and the second time it's been held at Thunder Mountain Raceway.

Track announcer Todd Evans is used to the sound of engines roaring, "some of these machines are making in excess of 2,000 horsepower." Evans says the event is open to anyone who has enough horsepower and of course the right tires to make it down the track. "You're welcome to try the snow drags, we did it last year and it was a great success. This year we've got twice the competitors and twice the spectators too."

Kelly Madore, the organizer of the event says it's a natural fit for his club who are used to doing the exact same thing in the summer on asphalt. "We've been racing for years so this felt like a natural progression. Thing is you gotta have the power and the tires, a couple of vehicles couldn't even make it up to the start line."

Weather couldn't have been better with the mercury hitting 12 degrees for a high.
