Young trades talent shines

Nearly 100 junior and high school students from all over the valley descended upon Okanagan College Friday to show off their trades and technology skills.

The SkillsBC Regional Trades and Technologies competition is held annually to determine who has the best hands and minds, but it’s also to remind youngsters that a career in the trades is not to be dismissed.

“We’re fighting that battle,” said Okanagan College marketing and recruiting assistant Kim Noakes, who co-ordinated the competition for Skills Canada and is also a certified welder.

“We’re trying to promote more trades at a younger age, because we find that if we bring more trades and technology into schools at an earlier age, they’re exploring their options more.”

This year was the event’s 25th anniversary, and it was one of 18 regional competitions being held across the province this winter.
