Spaghetti bridge battle

What do you call a fake noodle? … An impasta.

There were no fakers Friday at Okanagan College for the 36th annual Spaghetti Bridge Building Contest.

The day started off with a team competition, followed by the lightweight division, wrapping up with the crowd favourite heavyweight competition.

This year, 11 teams registered in the heavyweight class.

On the line was a $1,500 prize, and bragging rights.

Okanagan College student James Dessert walked away a winner, with a bridge that supported a weight of 137 kilograms (302 pounds) before buckling.

Dessert says the money will go towards his mechanical engineering degree.

''I think it was just lucky that mine did better. I would have liked it to do more, but I'm happy I won."

The heavyweight record at the contest was set a decade ago by two competitors from Hungary, Norbert Pozsonyi and Aliz Totivan of the Szechenyi Istvan University of Gyor. Their bridge, weighing just 982 grams, held an amazing 443.58 kilograms.

''It is all about the fun of the competition, but getting them thinking about science, tech, math, engineering, and opening their eyes up to some of those careers as well," said OC marketing manager Tyler Finley.
