Much more than just books

A new library branch that opened in West Kelowna Saturday offers a lot more than just books.

The brand new Okanagan Regional Library Westside Learning Lab opened its doors to the public Saturday morning, showing off all the technology inside.

The branch, located in the Okanagan Lake Shopping Centre, features a 3D printer, a recording soundbooth, a green screen for filming and all sorts of other technologies to teach the young and old new skills.

“Libraries have been evolving with time and technology is more and more integrated into our lives, so we're responding to the community's needs,” said Jessica Whu, branch head librarian at the new location.

“We're offering this space and the equipment for people to just create and be inspired.”

The new space is the first of its kind within the Okanagan Regional Library system, and Whu says they have plans to expand the services to other locations across the region.

The branch was packed with families Saturday morning, and Whu says she hopes to see that continue.

“Part of our vision was that this space was going to be bustling and full of people, so I'm really happy to see all the families and people of all ages here just exploring our space and getting to know what it's about and what we have to offer,” she said.

“We have classes and workshops running throughout the week so we hope that people will join us.”

The branch is open from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday to Thursday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Times for upcoming workshops and registration info can be found here.
