Local lawyer now a judge

A longtime Kelowna lawyer has been appointed a B.C. provincial court judge.

After completing his law degree at the University of British Columbia, Clarke Burnett began practising law in Kelowna in 1992 at Pushor Mitchell.

Practising civil and personal injury law in his early days as a lawyer, he went on to handle criminal defence as well as prosecution for the federal Department of Justice, now called the Public Prosecution Service of Canada, which handles the prosecution of drug-related cases.

Clarke became a partner at Pushor Mitchell in 2000.

He will be appointed a provincial court judge on Feb. 25.

Additionally, the B.C. government has also appointed a new Supreme Court Master in Kelowna.

Steven Schwartz was appointed on Feb. 19. Like Clarke, Schwartz has also worked at Kelowna's Pushor Mitchell firm, before founding Schwartz & Company, where he practised law until his recent appointment.

A master presides over civil matters, making decisions about pre-trial motions and other procedural orders.
