Vigil to remember Derek

A candlelight vigil will be held to remember a young Oyama man killed in a tragic crash.

Derek Flowers-Johnson, 18, was killed on Friday morning when a semi and his Toyota Corolla collided. The crash happened on a snow-covered section of Highway 97 just south of UBC Okanagan.

A vigil will be held Tuesday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Lake Country Alliance Church.

“As a community, we will come together and light candles to remind us of the bright light he was,” said Kendra Weisbrodt.

Flowers-Johnson was an active member in the community and condolences poured in with the news of his death.

He was a youth councillor and was involved in the youth firefighter program in Lake Country. He grew up in Oyama and graduated from George Elliot Secondary in 2018.

Donations of freezer meals, baked goods and financial donations for the family will be accepted on Tuesday.

The vigil is open to everyone in the community.
