18 year old killed in crash

UPDATE: 10:35 a.m.

An 18-year-old Oyama resident was the victim of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 97 near the UBCO overpass Friday morning.

The crash occurred just before 6:30 a.m. when a vehicle collided with a semi trailer.

“Investigators are on scene including a collision analyst and are working to determine what events led up to the crash,” says Cpl. Meghan Foster.

“Highway 97 North between Edwards Road and the university overpass has been closed in both directions and will remain closed until at least 1 p.m. this afternoon.”

Foster says southbound traffic is being diverted through Quail Ridge Boulevard, while northbound traffic will be diverted through Hereron Road.

She also says reports of a possible fatal crash in West Kelowna are not true.

UPDATE 9:35 a.m.

Castanet reporter Nich Johansen is now on scene of the collision on Highway 97 by the airport.

“It’s a semi versus a sedan, appears to be a Toyota Corolla but it's pretty banged up so it's tough to tell,” he says. “It appears the crash occurred on the median, both vehicles are right between the lanes on the median. Both vehicles are facing northbound."

Johansen has also indicated he has seen the coroner on the scene as well, indicating this may be a fatal collision. This could mean  the highway will remain closed until investigators have completed their work.

UPDATE 8:20 a.m.

RCMP Tell Castanet, "a serious motor vehicle accident has occurred which has resulted in a temporary closure of Hwy 97 in both directions between Edwards Road and the University overpass."

Southbound traffic is being diverted through Quail Ridge Blvd. Northbound traffic will be diverted through Hereron Road.

Updates to follow.

UPDATE 7:40 a.m.

Castanet is getting word of several more collisions around the city. Randy Mills says, "another on Campbell Road sounded like a possible fatal. Being attended to by West Kelowna Fire Rescue and another one on Dobbin Road."

Emergency crews are being kept busy early Friday morning and drivers are being advised to slow down to adjust to the slippery driving conditions caused by snow and warmer temperatures.

ORIGINAL 6:57 a.m.

Light snow has caused serious difficulties for drivers Friday morning.

There is not one but two incidents on highway 97. One on the west side of the William Bennett bridge which is causing traffic to back up in that area. Keep an eye on our Castanet traffic cameras for the latest traffic information.

The other incident is closer to UBCO about two kilometres south of the airport near Reid's corner. A semi tractor trailer has jackknifed. Emergency crews are on scene and traffic is going to be impacted in that area for the immediate future and it could be a while before traffic returns to normal.

No word on injuries in either incident.
