Don't take Glen Lake Road

Drivers trying to take routes other than the designated Highway 97 detour on the 201 Forest Service Road should think twice.

Two routes are recommended by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure after a rockslide closed the highway between Kelowna and Penticton. The closest and shortest is the 201, otherwise drivers are advised to take Highways 3A and 3, via Princeton.

Some have posted on social media, saying they are taking the Glen Lake Road, despite the ministry asking people not to.

One person said on Facebook: “I don’t think this road should be ‘advertised’ … too many people on it and will be a complete shit show, slows drivers down and even one accident and everyone is stuck.”

“The ministry advises all travellers to adhere to the designated alternative routes,” said a spokesperson. “The use of other unmaintained routes is discouraged for safety reasons.”

Snow is in the forecast starting Thursday afternoon and ending Friday evening, making back roads a risky choice.

Ministry staff say the 201 route will take about two hours, and drivers need to abide by the 50 km/h speed limit.
