Bike to work - in winter!

Feb. 8 is International Winter Bike to Work Day, and Kelowna is taking part.

To help riders get ready, the Kelowna Area Cycling Coalition is hosting a winter cycling workshop this Thursday at Parkinson Rec Centre, from 7 to 8 p.m.

"What better way to celebrate this mild winter than by helping Kelowna become a world leader?" says Darren Schlamp, president of the Kelowna Area Cycling Coalition.

"This will be the fifth year that Kelowna has participated. We generally rank highly among cities around the world in terms of numbers of riders committing to ride."

The workshop will cover how to stay warm, dry, and safe, with presentations by experienced winter riders on clothing strategies, seeing and being seen, winter bike handling, route planning, and bike setup.

Participants should be prepared to spend some time outside, so dress accordingly; and bring your helmet if you would like to try out some bikes with studded tires.

The cycling coalition will host three welcome stations on Feb. 8, providing hot refreshments and snacks. Locations are: downtown outside Bliss Bakery at 1289 Ellis St., the Landmark buildings outside Bean Scene at 1615 Dickson Ave., and at the UBCO turnoff from the Rail Trail.
