Society recognized globally

Quite an honour for the Okanagan Xeriscape Association.

It is the only Canadian organization invited to join a global group of societies for those with an interest in Mediterranean plants and gardens.

Mediterranean Gardening International voted to invite OXA to join late last year, following a visit from Alfredo Unda, a member of the Chilean chapter.

He was said to be impressed with the OXA's xeriscape demonstration garden at Kelowna's H2O Centre – enough to recommend an invitation be sent.

OXA officially became a member in December.

"This is a wonderful way to begin OXA’s 10th anniversary year,” said OXA co-founder Gwen Steele.

Member societies within MGi help each other by sharing information, expertise and resources.

Meetings are held in different parts of the world with tours of Mediterranean gardens and workshops on techniques for growing such plants.

Mediterranean plants enjoy hot, sunny weather and use less water than those in other climatic zones of the world. They are ideal in this climate for xeriscape landscapes, which are drought-tolerant.
