Diamonds save lives

Madison Erhardt

The Kelowna Women's Shelter third annual diamond earring fundraiser was a huge success.

The beautiful, 14-carat, white gold earrings from Premier Jewellery and Loans were appraised at $10,300, with the highest bidder winning the pair at $7,000.

All proceeds from the auction help women and children escape domestic violence.

"This fundraiser that Martin and his team do is incredible, and we look forward to it every year," said shelter director Karen Mason.

"Considering where we were at last year, we almost doubled the amount this year, so it just goes to show people are really interested in supporting not only our cause, but this wonderful fundraiser."

The shelter offers a safe place to stay, and essentials such as food, clothing and toiletries for women who have to flee quickly and don’t have time to prepare.

''Coming into the holidays, where everybody is celebrating a joyous occasion ... we do have individuals who are not home and not in a safe environment and don't have that holiday comfort that we all have. So, I felt it was a great window of opportunity to make a difference for people in need," said Premier's Martin Strasser.
