Knife pulled in meat theft

Police are seeking the public’s help to identify a shoplifter who brandished a knife when confronted by store staff in Kelowna.

The theft happened Dec. 13, about 9 p.m., at the Safeway store on Highway 97, when staff witnessed the man conceal a number of meat packages.

“Store employees chose to confront the male in an effort to prevent the theft,” says RCMP Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey. “Those employees were forced to back off when the suspect brandished a knife, allowing him to flee on foot with the unpaid merchandise.”

Staff followed the suspect at a distance towards Underhill Street, where they eventually lost sight of him. Police were unable to locate the man, but have released surveillance images of him leaving the store.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, about six feet tall. He was wearing a dark coloured hoodie, grey baseball cap, baggy pants, black shoes and was carrying a black bag.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or www.crimestoppers.net.
