Grisly carcass discovery

Hikers on Kelowna Mountain, just above the city's Mission area made a grisly Christmas Day discovery.

Jesse Germann tells Castanet he took his girlfriend and his dog to the popular hiking destination but made the discovery in the parking area.

"Basically if you're going to park the car to go hiking, it was a  grisly, horrific scene," Germann said.

He says the dog started barking and then he noticed four deer carcasses, in varying states of dressing or deterioration.

"There were three on one side of the road and one on the other and animals will pick at these things. Usually, hunters dispose of these things just over the edge and into the long grass."

Germann says he's seen other dumping in the area before but nothing quite like this.

"We did our hike but when we were leaving there were other people pulling into the parking area and it was interesting watching an absolute repeat of what we just went through."

The BC Conservation Officer Service says it's OK to return carcasses to the wild for other animals to eat, but carcasses are supposed to be kept away from the public and not disposed of where people can find them.
