Backcountry safety battle

Despite thousands of hours of education on backcountry safety over the past several years, the number of search and rescue incidents continues to remain high.

B.C.'s 80 search and rescue units respond to 1,600 rescues a year, more than the rest of Canada combined.

"Our educators talk to over 20,000 people a year and also set up at trailheads and do other special events," said Sandra Riches BC Adventure Smart executive director. "Our organization encourages a 3-T approach, training, trip planning, and taking the essentials."

Adventure Smart personnel will talk to Rutland Senior Secondary students Friday morning about their Survive Outside program, and move up to Big White Ski Resort Saturday and Sunday, providing information on snow and mountain safety, outdoor preparedness, search and rescue prevention, and proper gear.

Its programs are supported by the BC Search and Rescue Association and Emergency Management BC.
