Giving pets as a gift

Madison Erhardt

Giving a pet as a present may seem like a great idea this holiday season, but it’s important to make sure the person receiving the gift is ready for, and wants, the pet you plan to give.

"It really doesn't matter if it is Christmas, or Easter or a birthday, we would encourage everyone to go to our website where you can go through all the steps to see if you are really ready," said BCSPCA Branch Manger Sean Hogan.

SPCA staff also recommend knowing what you want before you come in.

"This helps us match you with the perfect pet based on both your wants and needs."

Even if you are ready to bring a four-legged friend into the family, the holiday season may not be the best time to do so.

"Given the number of risks and dangers in the household around Christmas, anything from having chocolate around, to ribbons and tinsel, they can be a real health risk to any young animal or a curious cat or dog,'' Hogan added.

New this year, the Kelowna branch has also started a giving tree.

"Staff have created ornaments, and what I love about this is that a person can take an ornament off the tree for $25 and make that donation and know exactly how that money is going to make a difference in the lives of animals."
