Housing protest planned

Neighbours opposed to a supportive housing facility planned for Agassiz Road plan to protest outside Kelowna City Hall on Monday.

The rally will be held at noon to highlight the mostly senior neighbourhood's concerns about the BC Housing project, which would operate a "wet facility" allowing drug use on the premises.

The Neighbourhood Alliance group has previously said the homeless housing initiative is the "right project in the wrong place."

It suggested second-stage housing for women and children would be better suited to the area, which is home to several seniors condo complexes.

Almost 250 people packed a recent meeting opposed to the project, and dozens more waved placards outside a BC Housing information session at the Ramada Hotel last month.

"It is our strong opinion that buildings that will likely house significant numbers of high-risk offenders, users of heroin and crack cocaine, and individuals dealing with serious mental disorders such as schizophrenia should not be placed in high density neighbourhoods, especially those that house large numbers of vulnerable seniors," the group said.
