Taxes could rise $160

The average taxpayer in Lake Country could pay as much as $160 more in municipal taxes in 2019.

That comes as council gets ready to look at the 2019 draft financial plan calling for a tax increase of 8.7 per cent.

More than half of the proposed tax increase, 4.9 per cent, will go towards servicing the debt on Lake Country's new fire hall.

Residents voted 62.9 per cent in favour of the new fire hall during the October municipal election, triggering the increase.

The remaining increase of 3.8 per cent includes 1.8 per cent for the Transportation for Tomorrow plan and 2 per cent for operating and capital costs.

Documents outlining some of the mandatory increases for next year show 1.5 per cent in union contract wages, about 2.5 per dent for CPI increases on other contracts, and a net increase of $83,000 for road maintenance.

The municipality is also being asked to increase staff by six positions and one new RCMP member.

Council will get its first chance to debate the budget next Tuesday.
