Flu targets workplaces

This year's Influenza, or flu strain, could cut a wider swath than the past two years, targeting younger and middle-aged people.

"From Nov. 25 to Dec. 1, we had 45 people test positive at Interior Health facilities, and we are seeing a sharp increase in the number of younger people which we typically see in H1N1 influenza 'A' season," said Medical Health Officer Karen Goodison. "The past two flu seasons have been predominately H3N2 strain which is more likely to target seniors."

Interior Health is recommending everyone get a flu shot, wash your hands often and stay home if you are showing signs of illness.

"This year the H1N1 strain could have a dramatic impact on workplace settings where younger and middle-aged workers are more likely to forego the flu shot." adds Goodison

Influenza is a serious and contagious respiratory infection that can lead to hospitalization, and death in severe cases. The infection spreads when a person comes into contact with droplets from an infected person who coughs or sneezes. Symptoms of influenza may include fever, aches, fatigue, headaches, muscle pain, a runny nose, sore throat and cough.

Anyone who doesn't have a flu shot must wear a mask when entering any Interior Health facility.
