Life-saving operation for pig

Precilla the pig underwent life-saving surgery this week.

The porky patient was brought to Star's Piggly Wiggly Sanctuary in Kelowna after its owner could no longer care for her.

"After acting under the weather, the loving team at Star’s got Precilla to the emergency vet. The vet confirmed she was pregnant with two piglets – both of which had died, but remained inside the uterus," said sanctuary owner Faith Affleck.

Surgery to remove the fetuses was needed to keep Precilla alive, but Affleck couldn't afford the $2,000.

"We have raised a quarter of the amount for her surgery from people all over the world," she said.

The surgery was performed Monday, but Precilla is not out of the woods yet.

"She was starting to show signs of septic. I want to thank everyone," Affleck added.

The sanctuary is a non-for-profit organization that helps farm animals settle into a forever home.
