Remembrance Day changes

Rob Gibson

Kelowna's Remembrance Day poppy campaign kicked off Friday at the Kelowna branch of the Royal Canadian Legion with the annual breakfast that helps raise funds for veterans in need.

Legion Branch 26 President, Jim White, tells Castanet they are trying something new this year along with the traditional poppy campaign, "we're doing the field of crosses. We took all 242 names from the cenotaph from the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War and we're setting up the crosses."

The display will start to go up in City Park on November 3rd and will remain up until after Remembrance Day.

"It's just all the guys who never made it back and they don't have a gravesite here."

The idea came from a popular display along Memorial Drive in Calgary which is a very visual reminder of the lives lost in the wars,

Last year, the Kelowna poppy campaign collected $184,209.65, which was an all-time record.

Separate campaigns are undertaken in West Kelowna, Lake Country Peachland and Vernon.
