Understanding young adults

Madison Erhardtn

"Slidin' into the DMs."

Lets face it, understanding young adults' lingo can be confusing at the best of times, but Nine Rising is here to help.

The Kelowna-based start up is releasing a series of talks titled Truth Be Told: A series for the parents.

"The series will highlight the most asked about and talked about subjects in the lives of our youth," said Kathleen Mackinnon, CEO of Nine Rising,

"This isn’t a parenting course, there is no ‘method’. There’s only empowered conversation, education, and relevant resources to what youth are currently experiencing and moving through."

The first series talk will take place on Sept. 27 at Third Space Coffee at 6 p.m.

"We will dive into how to talk to youth about self worth, creating healthy relationships, respecting online spaces, technology’s impact on mental health and social behaviour, helping youth move through their challenges and how to talk about sex and gender," Mackinnon added.

Nine Rising is an extension of Mackinnon's background in youth work, character education, behavioural psychology, gender studies, and community engagement.

"I saw a need to help parents out within the community because when you operate in the school landscape we all can see that it's not just teachers, community workers or coaches, it's all of us together," Mackinnon said.

"Often times parents were being left behind in certain conversations. So my goal is filling in the gaps for populations that need to be seen and heard, Mackinnon added.
