Best buildings short-listed

The finalists have been announced, and Castanet’s new building on Lawrence Avenue in downtown Kelowna is one of a record-tying 37 nominees up for the 10th annual Thompson Okanagan Kootenay Commercial Building Awards.

“There are many wonderful projects in this year’s event, which ties last year for the most ever for the awards, which is fantastic,” Business Examiner Thompson Okanagan’s Mark MacDonald said in a press release. “Each and every year, the building designs are becoming more elaborate, and it reflects well on the quality of commercial and industrial construction in the region.”

Fourteen of the 37 nominated buildings are located in Kelowna. The awards, which celebrate the best in commercial and industrial buildings, will be presented Sept. 20 at the Coast Capri Hotel.

The Castanet building, which opened in October, is an ode to the red brick feel of buildings that were built a century ago in downtown Kelowna. Wood windows and mullions added to the authenticity, and an old-fashioned marquee was added to the front of the building.

A fir-beamed clock tower, complete with solid bronze bells from Holland, adds plenty of character to the building and can be heard throughout downtown.

Tickets to the awards event are $125 and can be booked through www.businessexaminer.ca/events.
