Drunk driver destruction

Alanna Kelly

It was just before 9 p.m. at a busy Kelowna intersection when a drunk driver slammed into an oncoming vehicle – and the entire thing was captured on dashcam.

RCMP responded to the collision at Harvey Avenue and Cooper Road Wednesday night to find two vehicles heavily damaged.

Video shows an Alberta-licensed Chevrolet Blazer attempting a left turn onto Cooper and seconds later colliding into a Toyota Sienna minivan travelling westbound through a green light on Harvey.

The witnesses who captured the video, just feet away from the collision, watched as a man stumbled out of the Blazer.

"During their interaction with the driver of the Chevrolet Blazer at the scene, our investigators reportedly detected strong signs and symptoms, which led them to believe that his ability to safely operate his motor vehicle was impacted by alcohol," says Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey.

The driver was taken into custody and "provided samples of his breath determined to be in excess of the legal limit,” O’Donaghey added.

The 49-year-old Calgary man was later released with a prohibition from driving. He faces potential charges and is expected to appear in Kelowna Law Courts.
