Charity's stolen items found

The man who runs a local charity is back on the mountain bike trails this week teaching underprivileged youth how to ride after police found his stolen bike and laptop.

Mike Greer, executive director of Elevation Outdoors, had his car broken into Friday night near Ethel Street and Rose Avenue, and his mountain bike, laptop and two bags of biking equipment were stolen.

Greer was just one week into a seven-week mountain biking program, where he and several volunteers help teach young people how to mountain bike, providing them with equipment and instruction for free.

Elevation Outdoors offers several programs throughout the year, introducing youth from lower income families, those in foster care or those facing other struggles to snowboarding, rock climbing, sailboating and biking.

Following a Castanet story on the theft Saturday, Greer says police were able to recover his bike and computer.

“Due to the amount of awareness created yesterday, the RCMP received a tip and were able to recover my bike and my laptop,” he said Sunday.

Greer says he was overwhelmed by the response from the community following the theft.

“The amount of community support I got – people offering up bikes that I could use or computers to have access to while I tried to work things out – has been incredible,” he said.
