Details in bloody fight

Alanna Kelly

More details have been brought to Castanet about a vicious fight that sent one man to hospital with serious injuries and put a youth in custody.

Bloodied clothing, broken glass and alcohol containers scattered the scene Sunday morning. The incident unfolded just after 2:30 a.m. off Lakeshore Road and Lexington Drive in Kelowna.

A 35-year-old North Okanagan man is recovering in hospital after being stabbed in his left side. Witnesses describe his gash as 10 inches in length.

A GoFundMe campaign identifies the man recovering in hospital as Chris Kirby.

“The attacker hit him in the head with a bottle then proceeded to stab and cut him open,” reads the campaign.

Castanet reached out to Kirby, his girlfriend, and the creator of the GoFundMe page, but they were unable to comment on the incident.

A 17-year-old Kelowna man and his girlfriend were arrested. We won’t be naming either because they are minors.

The girlfriend contacted Castanet and said there is another side to the story.

“I turned my back for a minute, and I turned back and that man was on top of him, punching him in the head and smashing his head off the concrete,” she said.

“He pushed me in the middle of the road and then punched me in the back of the head and then attacked my friend… we started running, and I guess he tried to follow us, and that’s when the stabbing happened.”

It's still unclear what caused the fight, but alcohol is believed to have been involved.

The teenager was expected to appear in court this afternoon.
