Pulling buses for charity

People from the across the community met in the Prospera Place parking lot Saturday morning to pull some buses, laugh a lot, and raise a ton of money for local charitable causes.

The third annual United Way Bus Pull was held under the hot sun, but that didn't appear to slow any of the competitors down.

The event pits nine teams of eight against each other, to see who can pull a Kelowna city bus the quickest.

In past years, participants have raised $20,000 for the United Way Central and South Okanagan Similkameen, and executive director Helen Jackman expects this year to be similar.

“They're all doing some peer-to-peer fundraising and raising some money for the community,” she said. “Everything that United Way raises goes straight back into the local community here in the Okanagan."

The United Way supports local organizations that provide services for everything from kids living in poverty, to struggling families, to isolated elderly people.

“Over the last 12 months we were able to support about 60,000 people in the community,” Jackman said.
