Flotilla to open paddle trail

What is being billed as Kelowna's largest flotilla or water parade will officially open the city's new paddle trail.

The opening of the 27-kilometre trail is set for May 19, from 9 a.m. to noon.

The city is inviting all non-motorized paddlers to join the flotilla at Hot Sands Beach on the morning of the opening. Paddlers will depart immediately following an official ribbon cutting.

“The event will be a celebration of the lake and non-motorized water activities that promote physical activity,” said community and neighbourhood services manager Mariko Siggers.

The Kelowna Dragon Boat Racing Club took the lead in the project, using a sesquicentennial grant from the city to install 22 buoys from McKinley Beach to Bertram Creek Park to create the trail.

Following the opening, participants will have the opportunity to try different paddle sports for free at City Park.
