Hwy 33 remains closed

UPDATE 12:35 p.m.

Construction crews worked through the night on the Highway 33 closure south of 8 Mile curve but in spite of their best efforts there is still no estimated time of reopening, and assessments are ongoing.

Danielle Pope with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure tells Castanet, "Significant work is required, and progress has been challenging due to continual water seepage and extremely saturated ground. The detour remains available via Goudie Road and Cardinal Creek Road. Traffic control remains in place."

After initial confusion, the ministry has now restricted all commercial vehicles from using the local detour due to safety concerns. Commercial vehicles are required to use Highway 97 and Highway 3 through Osoyoos.

Message Signs have been erected in Kelowna and Rock Creek to advise operators of the detour details.

Pope says, "the ministry appreciates the patience of residents, drivers, and commercial vehicle operators while we complete this important work to ensure the area is repaired and safe for travel."

Transportation B.C. is working to rebuild Highway 33 east of Kelowna after water undermined the highway and caused segments of pavement to crumble down the embankment.

Steve Sirrett, district manager with Transportation B.C., told Castanet crews are working to rebuild the foundation and get the roadway open.

After initial confusion, commercial vehicles have been banned from using the Goudie Road detour.

There is still no definitive date when the highway will be open.
