Arrests for a good cause

Kelowna's Canadian Brewhouse will be turned into a makeshift jail on Thursday.

"Jailbirds" will be rounded up across the city for the Kelowna RCMP's annual Jail & Bail fundraiser for the Cops For Kids charity.

Otherwise law-abiding citizens will be arrested by off-duty police officers before facing a judge to own up to their charges. They’ll then have to dial for dollars to raise their "bail" by calling friends and family to help them out of their sticky situation.

Money raised will help the Cops for Kids Charitable Foundation provide much-needed medical equipment, therapy, learning and mobility aids for local children.

“I realize the importance of giving back to such a strong local charity,” says Canadian Brewhouse managing partner Felipa Marioras. "The annual Jail & Bail is a fun way for us to raise money to help kids with items that aren’t covered by government or other local agencies.”

Organizers hope to beat last year's total of $10,000, and there are still a few spots available for arrests, says Auxiliary Const. John Bauer.

“This year will be my eighth year as a rider for the annual Cops for Kids Ride. It truly amazes me to see all the different members of our great community come together to support a common cause of helping families in need.”

To have a friend or co-worker "charged," visit www.copsforkids.org or call 250-801-4438 to arrange their arrest.
